Spain may bid for 2018 World Cup

MADRID (AFP) - Spain may compete with England to stage the 2018 World Cup, Spanish media said Thursday, a day after a meeting of the country's football federation.
The head of the federation, Angel Maria Villar, suggested Spain's candidature during the meeting, and was backed by Secretary of State for Sport Jaime Lissavetzky as well as the president of Barcelona football club, Joan Laporta. The next World Cups are to take place in South Africa in 2010 and in Brazil in 2014. Only England has so far announced its candidature for 2018. But Belgium and The Netherlands have shown interest in a joint bid, and Russia, Australia and the United States have also been mentioned. World football's governing body, FIFA, is to announce its choice in 2011. FIFA President Joseph Blatter in April urged Spain to present its candidature, possibly in a joint bid with Portugal. Portugal has said it is interested, and the head of the country's football federation, Gilberto Madail, said in May he would raise the issue with Spanish authorities. A joint Spanish-Portuguese bid was not mentioned during Wednesday's meeting in Madrid. Spain, which won the Euro 2008 tournament this month, staged the World Cup in 1982. |

They should hold it in the USA. They'll definitely set new attendance records for a World Cup, just like they did in 1994.rosariod July 17th, 2008 16:52
If the United States will bid for 2018 World Cup, why dosen't Canada bid for a joint World Cup with the US. They can play some games here in Canada. They will fill the stadiums for sure.indsc4 July 17th, 2008 17:24
Seems like Sepp Blatter has a Spanish bias...Hold it in the USA or US + Canada!

U.S. and Canada works as well. But what Canadian stadiums would be used? BMO Field just ain't big enough for a World Cup (20,148 seats? Are you kidding?). You'd probably have to use some CFL fields, like Commonwealth Stadium in Edmonton. Also, you'd have to have France play at least one of their games in the province of Quebec for obvious reasons. And Spain would play at least once in southern California.DaJohnner July 17th, 2008 19:24
Duh?...Canada could develop new stadiums for the tourney if need be...and no Fance and Spain do not need to play in the previoulsly mentioned cities. The World Cup would be a success here cause of the deprived football fans and large corporate support...no matter where teams play.CheexJM July 17th, 2008 20:07
Spain is a good idea. As far as the crowd goes, they have HUGE stadia. Camp Nou alone is 100,000. Go Spain...I might actually be able to go to that World Cup in 2018!!!rosariod July 17th, 2008 21:03
Montreal's Olympic Stadium, can seat 70,000, Edmonton and Calgary can seat 50,000 Plus, I see no problem there. We don't need new stadiums. There would be only a handfull of games played in Canada anyways. It can be done.Tontodonati July 17th, 2008 22:55
Guys, don't forget the Skydome in Toronto. It can seat 55.000. The only problem's that FIFA demands natural turf rather than artificial. Canada can do what they did in Chicago in 1994. I think it was Soldier Field. They covered the artificial turf with a wooden floor and then they laid on it natural grass.Crusader 1987, France doesn't necessarily have to play in Montreal, Quebec nor Spain in California!ajax72 July 18th, 2008 06:20
Well guys you've had your kicks in '94 and nothing good came out of it footballwise. You still call the game soccer. Enough is enough.rosariod July 18th, 2008 06:35
Hey Ajax72, soccer or football, it's the greatest game on earth, and I think Canada deserves to host some games, like the rest of the world.DaJohnner July 18th, 2008 07:04
...and I believe the MLS is what came out of it and Canada's first team (and one of my favs) TFC are an exemplary franchise with amazing fan support. Bring on the WC...USA/Canada deserve it.Crusader1987 July 18th, 2008 13:40
Hey, before 1994, soccer was nowhere in this country outside the amateur ranks. Now, the USA is ranked in the top 20 in the world. I'd say that's something to be proud of.And as The Bard said, "Would a rose by any other name not smell as sweet?" It doesn't matter whether you call the game football, futbol, or soccer. It's the same no matter what.
Olympic Stadium could definitely host games, but the majority of the games would be hosted in the USA simply because we got huge football stadiums. We have three or four colleges in this country that have football stadiums that can seat 100,000+ (Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, and Tennessee).

Thats for sure that most games would be played in the states, all we want is that some are played in Canada. Stadiums would be jammed, especially if teams like Italy and France play a game here!!!ajax72 July 18th, 2008 20:57
Quote: "Hey, before 1994, soccer was nowhere in this country outside the amateur ranks" Unquote.Crusader1987, do you really mean that you have never heard of NASL - North American Soccer League which operated between 1971 and 1984? And one of its teams - New York Cosmos? And its star player Pele? And his team mates Carlos Alberto, Giorgio Chinaglia, Johan Neeskens, Franz Beckenbauer, etc.? WTF are you doing in a football blog you ignorant. Get the hell out of here ASAP.
rosariod July 18th, 2008 22:12
I remember the Montreal Manic here in Montreal. Olympic Stadium would get 50,000 people for the games. It was fun to see!!! It drew more people than our Baseball team, the Montreal Expos.Tontodonati July 19th, 2008 01:45
