LONDON (AFP) - Aston Villa are set to sign US goalkeeper Brad Guzan after agreeing a fee with his current club Chivas USA.

Villa manager Martin O'Neill agreed a fee in the region of 2million pounds for Guzan during the January transfer window but the deal fell through after he failed to obtain a work permit.

This time around the Birmingham outfit have again reached agreement with the Major League Soccer (MLS) club for Guzan who played against England as a second-half substitute at Wembley in May.

And Guzan's increased number of international appearances - he has been involved in five of the last eight internationals - means Villa are more hopeful of gaining Home Office approval.

In addition to his appearance against England, he has started against Sweden and Barbados and came off the bench against Switzerland, South Africa and Spain in internationals since October 2007.

A Villa spokesman said: "Aston Villa can confirm that a fee has been agreed this morning for Brad Guzan and he will become a Villa player subject to gaining a work permit."

Guzan will become Villa's second summer signing after Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell who moved from Stamford Bridge for around 5million pounds earlier this week.

How hard is it to get a work permit in the UK?

Yeah, you got a point. Tim Howard (Everton), Kasey Keller (Fulham), Brad Freidel (Blackburn Rovers), and now Guzan here. And they say America is terrible at The Beautiful Game.

Given the USA large population It should supply more players in the future. Watch out for China when soccer becomes more popular there. Soon we will be commenting on Chi Chow Chong, Lee Van Young, Win One Soon and Sui Lang Sun.

The problem is that soccer continues to be unpopular to the average American, and I can't figure out why. My only explanation is that Americans grow up with sports like baseball and gridiron football that take our attention away from soccer. However, that view is definitely turning around. MLS attendance is rising year after year.

Not to mention we have the best women's soccer team in the world, hands down. We have Title IX to thank for that.

Crusader 1987, I second that!

Another goalkeeper you might be seeing in Europe sometime soon is Matt Reis of the New England Revolution. The guy is really good. His instincts at the position are spot-on, and instincts are the biggest and most important thing a goalkeeper needs.
