Scholes suspended for opening Champions League match

AFP - 30 août 2008 00:10

Manchester United midfielder Paul Scholes (R) vies with Zenit St Petersburg´s Konstantin Zyryanov during their European Super Cup football match Manchester vs. St Petersburg, on August 29, 2008 in Monaco. Scholes is suspended for Manchester United´s opening Champions League match next month after being sent off in their 2-1 European Super Cup defeat to Zenit St Petersburg here on Friday.

MONACO (AFP) - Paul Scholes is suspended for Manchester United's opening Champions League match next month after being sent off in their 2-1 European Super Cup defeat to Zenit St Petersburg here on Friday.

The Red Devils midfielder was given his marching orders by referee Claus Bo Larsen in the final moments of the match following his second yellow card for deliberate handball.

United manager Alex Ferguson said afterwards: "It was a pity Scholes was sent off and he will miss the first Champions League match. It was a bit unfortunate but it happens."

Scholes will miss the Group E home match against Spaniards Villarreal on September 17. Scotland's Celtic and Aalborg of Denmark are the other teams in the pool.

Ferguson added England midfielder Owen Hargreaves, who has been struggling with tendinitis and hasn't made a first team appearance for United since helping win the Champions League in May, had been doing speed work in training for the last 10 days and had been disappointed he was not able to play in the match.

St Petersburg were the better team on the night in this annual battle between Champions League and UEFA Cup winners.

Ferguson had promised the Red Devils would not take the match as lightly as in 1999, when Lazio beat them 1-0, and his star players were on the pitch with the exception of Cristiano Ronaldo who was in the stands, still recovering from surgery.

Dick Advocaat's players went two goals ahead through Pavel Pogrebnyak a minute before the break and Danny with a half hour to go while Nemanja Vidic pulled a goal back in the 73rd minute for United.

I like it when people get booted for diving and offences like this.

Is this the article covering the European Super Cup game? A mere 3 sentences? Is this place a manure franchise?

Ajax, when do we start betting on soccer games? I can't wait to get rich. I don't have too many years left to live!

But we all can comment here and that is cool and since their is only a dozen or so of us, it almost makes us like pundits.

What Scholes was doing, God only knows.

Well, last night ManU were outplayed and outclassed. And I've noticed that this usually happens when they play away from home against a team that moves the ball well.

In my opinion ManU may be European club champions, but they are definitely not the best in Europe.

And, as Ajax rightly points out, this article covers the European Super Cup game in only 3 sentences. I really believe that a far greater coverage would have been given, if ManU had won.

But then, we've always known which way SocceWay is biased !!!!!!

this goes long way confirming my position that zenith was selling all their matches in the Russian League.

Why do people say it is only 3 paragraphs long, when it looks like it is about 8 one sentence paragraphs?

Last year: MUFC I think, were about the best team out there with C. Ronaldo but they only defeated Chelsea on a shootout and other clubs were weaker.

So Advocaat was coaching Zenit, no wonder they have a good team. The Russian league and their teams are doing well, good to see.

They re-aired this game late last night but I wasn't able to see it.

Hehehe....as predicted by yours truly, ManU without Queiroz and Ronaldo will win squat for the rest of this sesaon. And don't expect Ronaldo to change that. I predict he will not score 20 this year....likely about 10-12 (if even that).

It's Zenit, if you can't read. DaJohnner, I wouldn't be so brave if I were you, the "amazing" pairing for Torres and Keane were really "effective" against Liege.

The lamest CL winner ever. The russians could have won it with 3-4 goals margin but they simply had mercy for the bunch of lame mules calling themselves CL winners. And that's only the beginning of manure's misery-wait untill next December when they'll have to play for theClub World Cup.

Ajax if I felt sorry for you when Ajax lost, now I feel a bit dissapointed. I didn't think you'd go as low as calling Manchester United manure. I'd expect that from BesTalentScout or the biggest Liverpool fan (Livershit in your case) - DaJohnner himself.

That's the closest to an affectionate word I can come up with in this specific case.
