KRAKOW, Apr 20 (SW) - Wisla Krakow have won the Polish 1.Liga championship. Their only remaining rivals for the title crashed to an away defeat on Saturday.
Dyskobolia Grodzisk needed a win at Lech Poznan to stay in the race for the championship, albeit only in theory. But Poznan scored through Murawski in the 2nd minute and Bandrowski decided the match at five minutes from the end. Muszalik scored a late goal for Dyskobolia, 2-1. As Legia Warsaw won their match at Odra Wodzislaw Slaski, Dyskobolia drops down to fourth position with Legia taking the second place ahead of Lech. Wisla, who get to celebrate their championship at home against local rivals Cracovia Krakow tonight, have a 14-points advantage over Legia and Lech, while those teams have only four matches to go. For Wisla, this is their eleventh Polish championship after being the nation's strongest in 1927, 1928, 1949, 1950, 1978, 1999, 2001, 2003, 2004 and 2005. Wisla succeed last year's champions Zaglebie Lubin, who disappointed this season and occupy the sixth spot at the moment. |
