NYON, July 28 (SW) - The conflict in Israel and Lebanon could result in Israel not being allowed to host upcoming international matches because of the deteriorating security situation.

An extraordinary UEFA meeting in Nyon, Switzerland yesterday discussed the issue but did not issue a final decision, a move which angered Wales.

Wales are scheduled to play two matches in Israel next month – a U21 tie and a FIFA women’s World Cup qualifier – and insist that the matches should be moved to safe and nearby Cyprus.

An FA of Wales spokesman said: "We had certainly hoped for more from the UEFA meeting. We expected some guidance because the games are getting closer by the day.

"We are disappointed something more definitive wasn't done. The re-organisation for two such matches is very difficult with hotels and travel to be planned at what could be very short notice."

The situation could become even more complicated following this afternoon’s UEFA Champions League third qualifying round draw.

Israeli champions Maccabi Haifa find themselves in the pot, meaning that a lucrative tie with a club like Liverpool or AC Milan could be scheduled, in which case the opposing club would most likely call for the match to be moved abroad.
