SEVILLE, Apr 2 (SW) - Real Betis, barring a late collapse, almost certainly secured themselves a spot in La Liga next season after taking their city derby over Sevilla on Sunday. Elsewhere, Valencia kept on in their charge for an automatic Champions League berth with a win over Cádiz.
Real Betis - Sevilla 2-1 Sevilla could have closed the gap on Osasuna for the final Champions League spot, but a late goal in the first half doomed them to defeat ahead of their UEFA Cup quarter-final second leg in Russia on Thursday. Robert's penalty in the 16th minute gave Betis an early lead but Javier Saviola, coming off a double in the UEFA Cup, equalized for the visitors 13 minutes later. It looked as if the sides would head to the dressing room on level terms, but Fernando Varela's 44th-minute goal made it 2-1 to Betis, and that goal would hold up as the winner. Valencia - Cádiz 5-3 David Villa opened the scoring for the home side after just two minutes in only to see Cádiz equalize at 1-1 with a goal by Enrique just nine minutes later. Miguel Angulo retook the lead for Valencia in the 34th minute and David Navarro followed with their third less than a minute later to take a 3-1 lead into the dressing room at half-time. After Angulo's second of the game made it 4-1 to Valencia, Jonathan Sesma pulled a goal back for Cádiz as the Andalucians refused to go away. Villa, though, canceled that goal out a minute later for a 5-2 lead. Sesma's second goal in the 79th minute was a bit more consolation for the visitors, and Valencia are now two points behind second-placed Real Madrid. Osasuna - Getafe 0-4 Osasuna still have a five-point cushion in fourth place in La Liga, but supporters will not be pleased with the drubbing they received at El Sadar against Getafe. Veljok Paunovic's opener in the 35th minute started the misery for the Basque side, who found themselves two goals down after Ángel Dorado scored just three minutes later for a 2-0 Getafe lead. Paunovic's second of the game in the 54th minute sealed Osasuna's fate before Mario Pernia capped it off for Getafe with a goal in the 63rd minute. Deportivo La Coruña - Racing Santander 2-0 Deportivo still have an outside chance at qualifying for the Champions League thanks to their victory over Racing at the Riazor. Joan Capdevila's goal on 19 minutes fired the Galician side into the lead, and Iago secured full points when he found the back of the net in the 55th minute. Atlético Madrid - Celta de Vigo 0-3 Depor's regional rivals Celta could have helped them jump up in the table, but they too were victorious, this one away to Atlético Madrid. It was a stalemate for 70 minutes until Lequi opened the scoring for Celta, and Fernando Baiano's penalty all but secured the result with six minutes left to play. A third goal from Dutch international Daniel de Ridder capped off the victory for Celta, who are four points back of Osasuna. Alavés - Athletic Bilbao 0-0 A matchup of Basque foes in Vitória ended in a goalless draw as no one could find the back of the net at the Mendizorroza. The point for each side leaves Alavés in the 17th place, out of the relegation zone on goal difference with Bilbao two points ahead of the bottom three. Mallorca - Espanyol 0-0 Mallorca are sitting in the relegation zone, but only barely on goal difference after they were held to a goalless draw at the Son Moix against Espanyol. Mallorca's goal differential is two worse than that of Alavés and Espanyol are only a further point in front. |
