SAMARA, Sep 15 (SW) - AZ Alkmaar, semi-finalists in the UEFA Cup last season, were undone by Krylya Sovetov in Russia 5-3 while Feyenoord were held to a draw at home by Romanian side Rapid Bucuresti.
Krylya Sovetov - AZ Alkmaar 5-3 Eleven minutes in, Krylya were in front when Leilton headed the home side into an early lead, but Dutch international Ron Vlaar pulled his side level with a goal from just outside the area seven minutes later. Baba Adamu gave the Russians a half-time lead with a header just before the interval and Denis Kovba made it 3-1 just after the restart, only to have Kenneth Perez pull one back for AZ a few minutes later. Krylya's two-goal lead was restored at 4-2 when Andriy Husin put past Henk Timmer, but Barry van Galen converted a cross by Shota Arveladze with five minutes to play to give his side some hope. That hope was shot down near the end when Anton Bober put in Krylya's fifth of the night to give his side a two-goal cushion heading into the second leg. Feyenoord - Rapid Bucuresti 1-1 Feyenoord will be in an uneasy mood going into their second leg match with Rapid after the Romanians got an away goal in a 1-1 draw at De Kuip. Dutch striker Dirk Kuijt put Feyenoord in front on 40 minutes to give his side a deserved lead, but in the 76th minute, Ciprian Vasilache converted a spot kick for Rapid to give his side a shock draw in Holland. Banik Ostrava - Heerenveen 2-0 The misery continued for the Dutch sides as Heerenveen were thoroughly beaten 2-0 at Banik Ostrava in the Czech Republic. Maros Klimpl put the former Czech champions in front on 28 minutes before Lukas Magera converted a penalty in the 45th minute just before the interval to send his side to the dressing room with a big lead that Heerenveen could not address.
